My hometown! When you think of your hometown, what kind of emotions do you feel? Do you feel nostalgic, proud or is it a place you couldn’t wait to get away from? I think I have felt all of these emotions and more at one point in my life. Today, I am grateful and more appreciative of the town I call home. Do I still wonder what it would have been like if I had left? Well, of course but we all have those “what if” moments.
I grew up in Georgetown, SC, a coastal town where 5 rivers come together that provided plenty of natural resources and recreational activites. Water skiing being one of my favorites. I think back on those days of growing up here and I wouldn’t trade any of that for the world. I always felt safe in our little neighborhood. I was the only girl my age, so naturally I became a tomboy so I could hang with the boys. We made forts in the woods, played kick ball and road our bikes and skateboards everywhere. I even remember us forming a small band and writing songs. Those were cherished moments in my life.
Today I see Georgetown through the eyes of my children and grandchildren and I see their enjoyment of exploring and experiencing all that it has to offer. One of our favorite things to do is get ice cream at the Harvest Moon and walk the Harborwalk. Georgetown sits on the Winyah Bay and the shrimp boats, yachts and dinghys lie scattered in the waters everywhere. It is really picturesque and I can’t resist taking a picture everytime I’m there. My hometown has a rich history and there are many museums to explore. My favorite has to be the Kaminski House Museum and grounds. Live oak trees frame our streets and pathways. It’s beauty is irresistible.
We love bringing friends to visit Georgetown for some of the many events such as the Wooden Boat Show and the annual Plantation Tours. Our little town is quickly becoming known for its restaurants and is a favorite of foodies. One of our favorite little spots is the Coffee Break Cafe where we have our own coffee mugs and they serve some of the best chicken salad. We love Andy & Michele at the Front Street Deli. They are the most precious couple that loves our family and prays with us as we do for them. I don’t get to pop into town as much as I did but people don’t forget who we are!! They still love us and care about us!! This is what hometown means to me, people who love you and you love them back regardless of where you are in life. What makes your hometown so special to you, I would love to know?
